History of Sarangpur Hanuman Mandir

The Sarangpur Hanuman Mandir is renowned for its idol, which, according to tradition, was brought to life by Gopalanand Swamy with a touch of his stick. This event has become central to the temple’s unique medical rituals.

The statue of Hanuman is depicted as a robust figure with a prominent mustache, notably featuring Shani Dev in a feminine form under his feet, restrained and with bared teeth, all amidst a scene of plentiful sculpted monkeys.

The Swaminarayan community has undertaken numerous renovations of the temple. In 1899, Kothari Gordhandus of Vadal was tasked with managing the BAPS Temple, under whom Shastriji Maharaj (Shastri Yaganpurushdas), the founder, served.

During Shastriji Maharaj’s time, the temple underwent significant renovation, an adjacent bungalow was constructed, and land was acquired for expansion, contributing greatly to the temple’s current state.

Subsequently, Govardhan appointed a new key figure to the Sarangpur temple, and further improvements and buildings were added by the Vadal Gadi Mandir.

Hariprakash Swami is a highly trusted trustee. Adjacent to the main temple, there is a dedicated temple honoring Swaminarayan, housing numerous sacred relics associated with his life and teachings. This temple serves as a place of reverence and reflection for devotees, providing a unique insight into Swaminarayan’s legacy through the preserved objects.

Who is the lady under Hanuman’s feet?

At the renowned Kashtbhanjan Hanuman Temple in Sarangpur, a striking image captures attention—Shani Dev depicted in a female form beneath the feet of Lord Hanuman. This unusual portrayal carries a fascinating legend rooted in divine justice and protection.

The Legend Behind the Depiction:

Shani Dev, often known as the stern cosmic judge who tests individuals through suffering and hardship, once became the cause of immense distress for many. Witnessing this, Lord Hanuman, the ever-protective guardian of devotees, intervened to put an end to Shani’s torment.

When confronted by the mighty Hanuman, Shani Dev realized he stood no chance. To escape Hanuman’s wrath—knowing the Lord’s vow of celibacy—Shani cleverly transformed into a woman, hoping this would prevent any confrontation.

Moved by this act of humility and surrender, Hanuman chose to forgive Shani Dev. From that moment, Shani Dev is revered in a female form under Hanuman’s feet in this temple, symbolizing protection, surrender, and grace.

Symbolism & Belief:

This divine scene is not one of domination but of balance—showing that Hanuman protects his devotees from Saturn’s harsh influence, and that even Shani Dev pays reverence to the strength and compassion of Hanuman.
