Shravan month is considered the most sacred period of the year to connect with Lord Shiva.

During this auspicious time, millions of devotees wish to perform daily Shiva worship at home, yet many feel intimidated by complex temple rituals, lengthy Sanskrit chants, or strict priestly rules.

The truth revealed in the Puranas is reassuring: Lord Shiva is known as Ashutosh—the one who is easily pleased. He does not demand lavish offerings or flawless ritual mastery; He accepts a simple drop of water and a single Belpatra offered with sincere devotion (Bhava).

This guide provides a Simple Shiv Puja Vidhi for Laymen that strikes a balance between authentic Vedic and Puranic tradition and practical ease for modern householders (Grihasthas).

Required Puja Samagri (सामग्री)

Keep your setup simple. You do not need expensive items to complete this ritual.

• Shivalinga (Small Narmadeshwar, Brass, or Stone Shivalinga placed in a shallow metal tray/thali)
• Pure Water / Gangajal in a copper vessel (Lota)
• Raw Cow Milk or Panchamrit (Milk, Curd, Ghee, Honey, Sugar)
• Sandalwood Paste (White or Saffron Chandan)
• Unbroken Rice (Akshat mixed with a touch of Chandan)
• Belpatra (3, 11, or 21 intact, non-torn leaves)
• White Flowers and Dhatura / Bhang (optional, if available)
• Dhoop (Incense) and a Ghee Diya (Lamp)
• Naivedya / Bhog (Fresh fruits, sweets, or sugar candy / Mishri)
• Camphor (Karpura) for Aarti

Step-by-Step Shiv Puja Vidhi with Simple Sanskrit Mantras

Sit on a clean woollen or mat seating (Aasana) facing either East or North. Place your Shivalinga inside a wide plate or tray to catch the flowing liquids during the ritual.

Step 1: Purification & Intent (आचमन एवं ध्यान)

Take three small sips of water from your right palm for internal purification while reciting:

ॐ केशवाय नमः । ॐ नारायणाय नमः । ॐ माधवाय नमः ॥

(Om Keshavaya Namah | Om Narayanaya Namah | Om Madhavaya Namah)

Wash your hands with a little water. Close your eyes, bring your hands together in Namaskar Mudra, and focus your mind on Lord Shiva.

Short Dhyana Shiva Puja Mantra:

यावत् पूजां करिष्येऽहं तावत् त्वं सन्निधौ भव ॥

(Yavat pujam karishye’ham tavat tvam sannidhau bhava)

Meaning: “O Supreme Lord Shiva, kindly reside in this Shivalinga until I complete my worship.”

Step 2: Abhishek / Consecration for Shiva Puja (जल एवं दुग्ध स्नान)

Gently pour clean water or Gangajal over the Shivalinga in a slow, steady stream. Follow this with raw milk or Panchamrit, and finish with a final shower of pure water to wash the Shivalinga completely clean.

While pouring, continuously chant either the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or simply “Om Namah Shivaya”.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।

उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

(Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam | Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Ma’mritat ||)

Step 3: Tilak & Akshat Offering Shiva Puja Mantra (चन्दन एवं अक्षत)

Dab your ring finger into the sandalwood paste and apply three horizontal lines (Tripundra) or a central dot on the Shivalinga. Gently sprinkle unbroken rice (Akshat) onto the paste.

Mantra:

श्रीखण्डं चन्दनं दिव्यं गन्धाढ्यं सुमनोहरम् ।

विलेपनं सुरश्रेष्ठ चन्दनं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥

(Shrikhandam Chandanam Divyam Gandhadhyam Sumanoharam | Vilepanam Surashreshtha Chandanam Pratigrihyatam ||)

Step 4: Belpatra & Flower Offering Shiva Puja Mantra (बिल्वपत्र एवं पुष्प)

Offer Belpatra to the Shivalinga. Always ensure the smooth (shiny) side of the leaf touches the Shivalinga, with the stem pointing away from you. Next, offer white flowers or Dhatura.

Belpatra Mantra:

त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रियायुधम् ।

त्रिजन्मपापसंहारम् एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥

(Tridalam Trigunakaram Trinetram Cha Triyayudham | Trijanma Papa Samharam Eka Bilvam Shivarpanam ||)

Meaning: “I offer this single Bilva leaf to Lord Shiva—a leaf with three leaflets representing the three Gunas, the three eyes of Shiva, and the destroyer of sins committed over three lifetimes.”

Step 5: Light, Fragrance & Food Offering Shiva Puja Mantra (धूप, दीप एवं नैवेद्य)

Light your Ghee lamp and incense stick. Wave them clockwise in front of the Shivalinga three times. Place your food offering (Bhog/Naivedya) before the deity and sprinkle a drop of water around the plate to consecrate it.

Mantra for Shiv Puja Offering

ॐ नमः शिवाय नैवेद्यं निवेदयामि ॥

(Om Namah Shivaya Naivedyam Nivedayami)

Step 6: Shiva Puja Mantra for Camphor Aarti & Forgiveness Prayer (आरती एवं क्षमा प्रार्थना)

Place camphor on a small burner, light it, and perform the Aarti while chanting or singing:

कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारं संसारसारम् भुजगेन्द्रहारम् ।

सदावसन्तं हृदयारविन्दे भवं भवानीसहितं नमामि ॥

(Karpuragauram Karunavataram Sansarasaram Bhujagendraharam | Sadavasantam Hridayaravinde Bhavam Bhavanisahitam Namami ||)

After the Aarti, bow low and recite the Kshama Prarthana to ask forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the ritual:

आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम् ।

पूजां चैव न जानामि क्षमस्व परमेश्वर ॥

(Avahanam Na Janami Na Janami Visarjanam | Pujam Chaiva Na Janami Kshamasva Parameshvara ||)

Meaning: “I do not know how to invoke You, nor how to bid You farewell, nor do I know the proper methods of worship. O Supreme Lord, kindly forgive my mistakes.”

Yes. Anyone—regardless of age or gender—can perform daily Shiva Abhishek at home with reverence.

3. What should I do with the Abhishek water and milk afterward?

Collect the water and milk flowing out of the tray during Abhishek. You can drink a small spoonful as Prasad/Tirtham and pour the remainder into home garden plants (avoid offering it to potted Tulsi).
